How Word Memory Works
Learn how HanyuHub automatically tracks your vocabulary retention across reading, flashcards, and mini-lessons.
Overview
Unlike traditional apps that only test your memory inside rigid flashcard decks, HanyuHub uses an intelligent Spaced Repetition Memory Engine that connects everything you do across the platform.
Whether you are reading an article, solving a sentence puzzle, or reviewing flashcards, your interactions automatically feed into a unified memory score for every single Chinese word you encounter.
How Your Activities Feed the Memory Engine
Every time you practice on HanyuHub, the system evaluates how much mental effort was required to recall a word:
- Marking Correct (): Confirms that you successfully retrieved the character and definition from memory, extending your next review date.
- Marking Incorrect (): Flags the word immediately for a refresher so it doesn't slip away.
- Sentence Building: Reconstructing a sentence from scrambled words provides a strong memory boost because you understand grammar and context.
- Pinyin & Tone Drills: Accurately identifying tones and spelling reinforces phonetic memory.
- Matching Games: Pairing Chinese characters with English definitions strengthens rapid visual recognition.
When you complete a reading passage with study tracking turned on:
- Words you read without looking up: The system registers that you recognized these words naturally in context, quietly strengthening their recall score.
- Words you tapped for a definition lookup: Tapping a character for an English hint signals that you needed help. The word is automatically scheduled for a timely review so you can master it next time.
Memory Impact by Activity
Not all practice requires the same cognitive effort. HanyuHub automatically translates your performance into spaced-repetition intervals:
| Activity | Your Result | Memory Impact | What Happens Next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sentence Building | Passed | Easy (+4) | Longest review interval extension |
| Flashcard / Pinyin Typing | Correct | Good (+3) | Standard review interval extension |
| Article Reading (No Lookups) | Finished Passage | Good (+3) | Natural context reinforcement |
| Word Matching Games | Matched | Hard (+2) | Modest memory boost |
| Any Exercise or Test | Incorrect | Again (+1) | Reappears soon in your review queue |
| Article Reading Lookup | Tapped for definition | Again (+1) | Scheduled for an upcoming refresher |
"Automagic" Word Graduation
You don't need to manually micromanage word lists, sort cards into folders, or worry about scheduling reviews:
- Automatic Promotion: When a word's memory stability reaches 30 days through consistent, successful reviews, HanyuHub automatically marks it as Self-Learned.
- Smart Memory Decay: If you don't practice for an extended period, the recall bar will gradually shift from green to yellow, reminding you when it's time for a quick tune-up before you forget.
Manual Controls & Overrides
You are always in full control of your vocabulary progress:
- Instant Learn (): If you come across an easy word that you already mastered before joining HanyuHub, click Mark as Learned on its character card. This immediately promotes it to a 90-day stability interval.
- Unlearn / Reset: If you ever want to re-drill a learned word from scratch, click Mark as Unlearned to reset its progression.
Tips for Maximizing Retention
1. Aim for Daily Consistency
Practicing for 10 to 15 minutes every day is far more effective for long-term retention than a 2-hour cramming session once a week.
2. Clear Your Dashboard Study Queue
Check the Your Study List widget on your home dashboard every morning to quickly review any words that are due for that day.
3. Read with Immersion
Read articles with Article Interaction Mode turned on. If you know a word, keep reading! If you get stuck, tap it—the system will handle scheduling its review for you.
